The Lodge of Journeymen Masons, No. 8, stands among Scotland’s historic operative lodges. Formed in Edinburgh by working stonemasons, it emerged not from patronage, but from principle — asserting its lawful independence while helping shape the early character of Scottish Freemasonry.In an age when the craft was becoming increasingly symbolic, No. 8 retained a living connection to the operative tradition from which it sprang. Our members built the city in stone; they also built a lodge defined by diligence, self-governance, and public duty. Recognised from the beginning as distinctive within Scottish Masonry, we have contributed to national ceremonies, civic life, and the development of the wider Craft — while maintaining a character entirely our own.We welcome requests from scholars and will endeavour to make such records as can be accessed by the public available for scholarly purposes.
